Miscellaneous arithmetic: Or A full account of the new calendar; with the several uses of the logarithms, and of multiplication and division by Mony, &c. In seven parts. containing, I. A brief account of the festivals and fasts of the Jewish and Christian churches; which such others as are mentioned in the present new calendar; very necessary for the better understanding the said calendar; II. A dissertation concerning years, months, &c. and the manner of their being settled in the world, for the better computation of time. Together with the calculation of scripture-measures, weights, and coins: and an observation concerning the exquisite workmanship of the tabernacle, &c. in the time of moses. ... VI. Some observations on the weather; by which any person is enabled to form to himself some ideas of it for the time to come; to which is subjoined, a taste of enigmatical writing, together with the character of a good Christian, set forth in twenty paradoxes, with their solutions. VII. An essay concerning the education of children, so far as relates to the several sciences which they are to learn at school. The whole, being the fullest and compleatest of this kind extant, is designed for the use of schools in Great Britain and Ireland; and in the English plantations and colonies, as subjects both profitab'e and entertaining. The instructor's assistant. Being a compendium of arithmetic, both practical and theorical, in four parts, containing, 1. Arithmetic in whole Numbers, wherein are all the Rules demonstrated in a plain and easy Manner, having more Questions in each Rule than any now extant, some of which are worked at large, and others with their Answers annexed. 2. Vulgar Fractions, wherein several Things that have been omitted by others, are inserted in a plain and familiar Manner. 3. Decimal Fractions is also treated largely, as also the Square and Cube Roots. A general Rule for extracting the Roots of all Powers-Likewise Interest, Annuities, &c. both simple and compound (after the Method of the late Mr. Ward, but more copious) with necessary Tables to each Rule, shewing the Method of making them, and their Application to Use. 4. The Multiplication of Feet, Inches and Parts, shewn six different Ways; to which is annexed Geometrical Problems, the Mensuration of Superficies, and Artificers Work, in a plain and easy Manner; as also Solids, and the five regular Bodies. To which is added an Appendix in a miscellaneous Way, having a Variety of useful and instructive Exercises to qualify Youth as an Introduction to Trade and Business. The Whole being collected together after the easiest and newest Method, is not only designed for the Use of Schools, but also for the Benefit of all Artificers and others. Clavis horologiæ; or, A key to the whole art of arithmetical dialling, In two Parts. The first shewing how to draw the hour-lines on all manner of regular dials and how to reduce all irregular dials into regular forms, by means of a new latitude and new declination, and that arithmetically. The second part sheweth how to place all manner of furniture on all sorts of dials, let them be never so irregular, and that arithmetically: whereunto is annex'd the tables of the attitude of the sun for every hour of the day, at his entrance into the 12 signs, from one degree of latitude to 90; with tables of azimuch to each latitude, and for every hour of the day, at his entrance into each sign; with many other tables useful in the art of shadows. Whereunto is annexed an appendix, being the explication of the pyramidical dial set up in His Majesty's garden at White-hall, 1669. In which very many sorts of dials are contained: by which, besides the hours of all kinds diversly expressed, many things relating to geography, astrology and astronomy, are by the sun's shadow made visible to the eye, by that Reverend Father Francis Hall, alias Line, of the society of Jesus, professor of the mathematicks at liege in Germany.
